Learn to design environments that carry mood, story, and intention, starting from a single feeling and ending with a finished illustration. Taught the way I actually work, on an iPad, with a process built for production.
I spent years chasing this. I'd open a blank canvas, block in some shapes, and it would just sit there. Flat. No mood, nothing that made me want to keep going.
So I'd go looking for answers. Another tutorial, another Pinterest board, another hundred saved references. Every artist seemed to have their own secret sauce, and none of it ever quite added up to my process. I just got more confused.
What actually changed things wasn't a new trick or some brush I was missing. It was realizing I didn't need more tutorials. I needed one thread that tied it all together.
It’s not magic, and it’s not talent. It’s a handful of small, repeatable decisions, the kind of thing that only feels obvious after you already know it.
Concept Artist · Illustrator
I'm a senior concept artist and illustrator working in games and animation, with clients like Wizards of the Coast, Blur, Paramount, Eidos, and Disney. I've been doing this professionally for over 10 years, and I still don't take it for granted.
I started out in background painting for animation, but I always wanted to be a concept and visual development artist. I taught myself for a while, landed a few indie projects, then spent all of my savings to go to school in Montreal and learn from people who were actually doing this for a living. Long story short, I've been a working concept artist and illustrator ever since.
The most important shift happened when I stopped hunting for the perfect technique and started paying attention to what actually built mood: light logic, edge control, restraint. Small, boring, repeatable decisions. Not talent. Not some secret brush.
This course is my process, distilled. The same one I use on client work, on my personal book Black Shore, and on the pieces I share with my Patreon and YouTube community. I care a lot about atmosphere and storytelling in environments, and I really care about helping other artists find actual joy in this, not just the technical skill part.
Grady Frederick is a master of narrative environments; his ability to weave atmosphere into every piece provides an incredible lesson in cinematic design. We are delighted to welcome Grady back to our school; his previous classes were a massive hit with our students.
Grady is an absolute beast both in terms of producing art (obvious) but also in terms of communicating how and why he does things, as well as giving feedback. He takes time to explain his thinking and really opens your mind to different possibilities. He’s grounded at all times, with confidence but never arrogance.
I’ve been following Grady’s work for many years and with every piece he creates I feel inspired. He has such mastery of mood, light, and story. When someone asks who my inspirations are, Grady is definitely one of the first I mention.
PAINTED BY MY STUDENTS
Imagine opening Procreate and knowing exactly where to start. You lay down your first values and already sense the mood taking shape. The fog, the light, the quiet depth that makes people stop scrolling.
You don't need to be the most technically gifted artist in the room. You just need your process.
You're the one other artists ask, "how'd you get it to feel like that?"

This isn't a one-off painting tutorial. You'll learn a full workflow (mood, sketch, refine, compose, value, color, finish) that you can reach for every time you sit down to paint, so starting a new piece feels exciting instead of overwhelming.
You already have the eye. This unlocks the ability to translate what you feel into your painting, so your worlds carry real mood and depth instead of looking technically fine but emotionally flat.
You stop letting each piece define whether you’re a “real” artist. Doubt still shows up, but you have a process to keep moving and freelancing, personal projects, and sharing your work start to feel within reach.
This course is broken down into 40 video lessons and around 7 hours of content, walking you through a full environment from a blank canvas to a finished, atmospheric piece.
No prior experience needed, you don't need to already have a 'process,' that's the entire point of this course.
We start with the fundamentals, laying down your idea and getting your sketch right, then build forward through composition, values, and color, all the way to a polished final image. It's one continuous project, so you see exactly how each decision connects to the next, not isolated tips floating on their own.

We start with where you're at right now. No assumptions about what you already know, just a clear look at what this process actually is and why it works, so you're not guessing what's coming next.
You don't need a fancy setup for this. I'll show you exactly what's on my canvas when I start an environment, which brushes I actually reach for, how I set up my layers. That's it. Ten minutes and you're not thinking about it again.
Every strong environment starts before you even sketch. Here you'll learn how I turn a loose idea into a real brief with design pillars that guide every decision after, so your painting has direction instead of drifting.
This is where the blank canvas stops being scary. I loosen up, throw down ideas fast, and don't worry about any of it being good yet. Some of my worst first sketches turn into my favorite pieces later, and you never know which one until you've got a few down on the page.
Once you've got options on the page, the real work is choosing and sharpening. You'll see exactly how I narrow down a sketch and push it further, so your strongest idea actually gets the attention it deserves.
A lot of environments fall flat simply because the eye doesn't know where to go. This module breaks down how I build compositions that guide the viewer's attention on purpose, not by accident.
Values are doing almost all the work before color ever shows up. Honestly this is the module I'd tell you not to skip, even if it feels like the boring one.
Color is where a lot of people panic, myself included for a long time. I'll walk you through how I actually pick a palette for mood instead of just guessing and hoping it works. It's less about knowing "the right colors" and more about a handful of decisions you make on repeat.
Detail without direction just adds noise. I'll show you how I decide what's actually worth pushing further and what to just leave alone. Took me a long time to learn that more detail isn't the same as more finished.
Knowing when a piece is done took me years to get a feel for. I'll show you how I make those last calls, what I tighten, what I leave alone, and how I decide it's finished instead of just tired of looking at it.
Congratulations, encouragement, next steps (industry vs. hobby), and your certificate.
